Grant approved for Ely play area

A play area in Ely is to benefit from a grant approved by East Cambridgeshire District Council totalling 7,000.

At Community Services Committee, Councillors agreed funding from the East Cambridgeshire Community Facilities (Section 106) Fund to help pay for the upgrade of a play area in New Barns in Ely.

The bid was made by the City of Ely Council as part of improvements which will cost just over 14,000.

Is the dream of a Soham Railway Station about to come true?

Work is set to start on a feasibility study to discover the costs, timescales and scope of a project to potentially bring a railway station back to Soham.

The work, set to report back in the Spring, will examine the feasibility of providing a railway station and train service in Soham.

Balancing the budget for the future

Throughout the last month, Committees at East Cambridgeshire District Council have been assessing proposals to save more than 2million over the next four years to balance its budget.

The tough choices were a result of the Government announcing cuts of nearly 29 per cent to the Council’s main Government Grant for the only the next two years without indicating what will happen from 2012 and potential issues such as the housing benefit overspend which is predicted to grow.

This month sees the grand opening of the adiZone in Soham and who better than a World-Class sportsman to come along to help with the ribbon cutting.

Tim Henman, former British number one, World number four tennis player and winner of 15 career ATP titles, will be at the Barley Fields Estate in Soham on Friday 25 February to open the new facility, offer coaching tips to some young tennis hopefuls and take part in a question and answer session with local sports clubs.

Setting a budget for our future

East Cambridgeshire District Council has set its budget for 2011/12 to protect the core services which residents need and freeze its share of Council Tax for the year.

At a Full Council meeting last night, Councillors agreed a four year programme to save over 2.6 million as a result of the Government announcing cuts of nearly 29 per cent to the Council’s main Government Grant for the next two years.

Improving the quality of life in East Cambs

Thanks to feedback from residents, a 20 year plan to improve the quality of life for people living and working in East Cambridgeshire has been developed.

Order confirmed to tackle alcohol related behaviour

Councillors last night agreed an order to stop alcohol fuelled anti social behaviour spoiling the public’s enjoyment of the green spaces surrounding Ely Cathedral.

The decision restricts the consumption of alcohol that could cause nuisance, annoyance or disorder at Cathedral Green, Cross Green, St Mary’s Green and Cherry Hill in Ely

New Committee Structures to Improve Council Performance

Members in East Cambridgeshire last night approved plans to help the District Council become more effective while saving the authority money in the future.

The changes involve a reorganisation of committees to produce more transparent and effective decision making while also creating opportunities to deliver improved scrutiny of policies.
