Councillors in East Cambridgeshire last night (Thursday 27 February) agreed a council tax freeze as they approved a balanced budget for 2014/15.

Despite the financial pressure created by the on-going reduction in the support grant from Central Government, the success of the District Council’s medium term financial strategy has allowed the Council to freeze the part of the council tax they are responsible for.

With town centres looking to become more diverse and innovative, the District Council is working with local shops and associations to see how it can help.

One example is a new initiative called the East Cambridgeshire Pop Up Grant Scheme.

The scheme involves giving potential retail entrepreneurs the chance to test out their ideas in either existing shops or in vacant stores.

Through a ‘pop up’ shop, an entrepreneur can test with real customers whether their product could work and also bring vacant retail space back into use.
