Councillors to make final decision on devolution

Reference:  Date:  Mon, 11/07/2016 Councillors from across the county will take their final votes on whether to complete the process for a devolution deal for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough next week.   Full Council meetings will take place involving the seven councils set to form a new Combined Authority.   The first meetings will take place on Tuesday 15 November 2016 with Cambridgeshire County and Cambridge City Councils.  

UK’s first sake brewery blessed in traditional Jichinsai ceremony

Date:  Tue, 11/01/2016 A ground breaking ceremony like no other has been held at the construction site of the UK’s first sake brewery in East Cambridgeshire.  The event which is known as a “Jichinsai” is a traditional Shinto ceremony undertaken to purify the building site prior to laying the foundations and to pray for the safety of the people involved in the construction. 

Next steps in place for Barton Road development

Date:  Wed, 10/26/2016   Following the approval for planning permission in August of this year, initial steps to progress the development of 11 homes on Barton Road, Ely are set to commence on the 7th November.   The next stage of the development will be an archaeological survey, which will identify whether there is anything of historical interest on the site.

UK’s First Sake Brewery Appoints Local Contractor

Reference:  Date:  Tue, 10/25/2016 The team behind the UK’s first Sake brewery have appointed a local contractor to undertake the building work which is now underway. Patrick Doyle Contractors have been awarded the contract for the build, which will be based at Fordham Abbey Estate, East Cambridgeshire and will see £9m invested over a period of five years.

Skills show helps bridge the gap between education and employment

Reference:  Date:  Fri, 10/21/2016 A local skills show has brought together young people and local employers to talk about career opportunities in the district.   The East Cambridgeshire Career & Skills Show, organised by a partnership including Ely College, East Cambridgeshire District Council and Form the Future, is now in its third year and has continued to grow and attract attention from the schools, colleges and business alike.

An apple a day … or the day of the apple

Date:  Fri, 10/07/2016 The classic English apple is set to be celebrated once again at the annual Apple Festival in Ely.   From humble beginnings over 15 years ago, the event has now grown into one of best apple celebrations in the area.  What’s more Watergull Orchards, one of Cambridgeshire’s apple and juice producers and supporters of this event, will once again be in attendance with their impressive display of apples.  

Result for the Parish of Ely – North Ward by-election

Date:  Thu, 10/06/2016 On Thursday 06 October 2016, voters in took to the polls to vote in the Parish of Ely – North Ward By-Election.   Polling stations nationwide opened at 7am and closed at 10pm. The count venue was the Council Chamber, East Cambridgeshire District Council. The turnout was announced as 16.17%.  At 23.03pm, the Returning Officer, John Hill, declared the count totals, which are as follows:    The total number of ballot paper counted was 855 The number of votes cast in favour of Edward Bengt Carlsson Browne (Labour Party) – 179

Who’s That Knocking at my Door?

Inaugural Health & Happiness Day Hailed a Hit

Reference:  Date:  Tue, 09/20/2016 Information regarding the election of a parish councillor for the Ely North Ward has been released today. Polling stations for eligible voters will be open from 7.00am until 10pm to vote for a new parish councillor on the 6th October 2016. Persons nominated for the role are Edward Bengt Carlsson Browne (Labour Party), Mark Cooney (Spotted in Ely), Richard Gareth Llewelyn Morgan (no description) and John Yates (Independent). Postal votes for the election will be sent out on Thursday 22nd September to those who have registered.

Fun to be had at first Health & Happiness Day

New Website set to Boost Tourism to Ely

Date:  Tue, 09/13/2016 A new website designed to showcase the gems of Ely has been launched by the town’s tourism ambassadors. Visit Ely has refreshed the design and feel of www.visitely.org.uk making it easier to navigate and more visually appealing. It has also been made mobile responsive and has links with social media networks which should increase its reach by 80,000 users in the next year.

Consultation Shows Support for Devolution

Date:  Wed, 09/07/2016 Councillors have welcomed the outcome of a public consultation on proposals to devolve power and hundreds of millions of pounds of funding from Westminster to Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The consultation was launched in July and finished in August. It included a proportionally representative Ipsos MORI phone poll of 2,280 residents as well as an online survey which 1,500 people completed, plus comments from business, community groups, parish councils and other organisations. The scale of the response has surpassed similar consultations in other devolution areas.

Free tours of Ely’s Landmarks to celebrate its history and heritage

Reference:  Date:  Mon, 09/05/2016 A host of Ely’s historic landmarks will open their doors to the public free of charge as part of the National Heritage Weekend (9-11 September). Ten venues in the city are involved in the programme and some guided walking tours have also been arranged to take in period buildings and significant architecture. Among highlights are a visit to The Stained Glass Museum to see windows dating back to 1200 and the fossil and Roman remains exhibitions at Ely Museum.

Countdown begins for Health and Happiness Day

No barrier to building for people who stick to the rules, says Council

Reference:  Date:  Tue, 08/30/2016 A local authority planning department that approves 94% of applications has said that there is no barrier to building for people who follow the rules. Officers for East Cambridgeshire District Council have worked hard to challenge the reputation the sector has for hindering rather than helping people with applications for development. But while the majority of cases get the thumbs up, their firm but fair policy means they take a hard line with people who do not follow due process.

East Cambridgeshire Leisure Centre boosted by £1.5M Sport England grant

Reference:  Date:  Thu, 08/18/2016 Sport England’s Project Committee has approved a conditional lottery award of £1.5M towards the development of the East Cambridgeshire District Leisure Centre. At its full council meeting in June, East Cambridgeshire District Council agreed to proceed with the new District Leisure Centre project, subject to receiving £1.5M funding from Sport England. Confirmation of lottery award means the project is now fully funded and can go ahead.

Ely scoops double award win for its Parks and Green Spaces

Acquisition of land for commuter car park

Reference:  PR/28JUN/carpark Date:  Thu, 06/30/2016   East Cambridgeshire District Council has purchased land close to Ely railway station with the aim of providing additional car parking spaces for commuters. The land is close to the Tesco ‘Click and Collect’ depot at The Dock. Subject to obtaining planning approval, the Council is aiming to provide at least 100 new car parking spaces and a lit walkway linking the new carpark to the existing car parking facility at Angel Drove. It is expected that the cost of parking at the new site will be the same as the prices at the Angel Drove car park.

A Summer Celebration: A Concert by the New Egham Singers – 16th July 2016

East Cambs agree plan for Lancaster Way coach parking

EU Referendum results for East Cambs

Reference:  PR/24Jun16/EUref Date:  Thu, 06/23/2016   On Thursday 23 rd June 2016, voters in East Cambridgeshire, and throughout Britain, took to the polls to vote whether to remain or leave the European Union. Polling stations nationwide opened at 7am and closed at 10pm. The verification/ count venue for East Cambridgeshire was Ross Peers Sports Centre, Soham. Verification of all 69 of East Cambridgeshire’s boxes (including one for postal votes) was completed at 18:14 on Friday 24th June, and the turnout was announced as 77.07%. Counting began straight afterwards.

Emergency tree felling work taking place in Ely next week

Reference:  PR/17Jun16/TreeWork Date:  Fri, 06/17/2016   Removal of a mature willow tree in Ely will take place next week, on Wednesday 22 nd June, to ensure the area remains safe to the public.   The Willow tree (tree number 2183, highlighted on the site plan) is situated near the corner of Lavenders Land, on the edge of the Riverside footpath, off Willow Walk. After recent inspections, it has been found that the main stem of the tree is badly decayed, rotten and deteriorating rapidly, and in the interests of public safety, must be felled.

Planning Committee approves demolition of unauthorised building

Reference:  PR/15Jun16/Planning Date:  Wed, 06/15/2016   East Cambridgeshire District Council’s Planning Committee took the decision to authorise the Planning Service to arrange the demolition of an unauthorised building at Sappers Rest, Mepal. The building was erected without planning permission and a retrospective planning application was refused. After all other avenues of negotiation were exhausted with the applicant to secure its removal, an Enforcement Notice was served on the building as it was expedient to do so and in the public interest.

Project to provide young people in need with daily essentials

Archaeological dig at new District Leisure Centre site underway

Reference:  PR/16May16/dig Date:  Mon, 05/16/2016   The archaeological excavation of the site on Downham Road, where East Cambridgeshire District Council is hoping to build a new leisure facility for the District, will start this week (commencing 16th May). At the request of the Cambridgeshire County Council Historic Environment Team, the whole 2.8 hectare site will be excavated because it is located in an area of high archaeological potential. The work is being carried out by Cambridge Archaeological Unit, part of the University of Cambridge and is expected to take 13 weeks.

East Cambs paving the way for a housing revolution

East Cambs launches 3R campaign to tackle radicalisation

Council warns against deadly food supplement

Reference:  PR/09May16/DNP Date:  Mon, 05/09/2016   East Cambridgeshire District Council is warning consumers against purchasing any supplements which may contain the chemical commonly known as DNP. This extremely dangerous and toxic compound is marketed over the internet as a weight loss or body building supplement but, if taken, it can quickly cause kidney failure and even death. Furthermore, taking this product alongside other performance enhancing drugs such as Clenbuterol can greatly increase the risks of dying. There have been six reported deaths linked to the supplement in the UK and dozens worldwide.

Jason Ablewhite elected as new Police and Crime Commissioner for Cambridgeshire

The vote took place on Thursday 5 th May across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, with the result being declared on Friday 6 th May at 17:27. Jason Ablewhite, the Conservative Party Candidate, beat Dave Baigent, Labour Party, after second preference votes were counted, as neither had managed to get 50% in the first round. Jason Ablewhite received a total of 81,851 votes, while Dave Baigent received a total of 72,480 votes.

Community spirit high as Queen’s Beacon burns brightly in Burwell

The celebrations, organised by East Cambridgeshire District Council in conjunction with Burwell Parish Council, began with the ringing of St Mary’s church bells. This was followed by a superb performance from the Burwell Community Choir, who sung beautifully by The Guildhall in their black outfits and blue scarves, covering a range of songs from Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) by Shakira to Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. 

Council dog warden reminds owners of new rules

New allergy rules helping sufferers in East Cambs

Roll up for the World Eel Throwing competition

Members of the Council voted to ratify the East Anglia Devolution Agreement at the Special Council Meeting on Wednesday 13 th April. The proposed Deal was announced in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s budget speech in March this year.

The Queen’s birthday celebrations in East Cambridgeshire

The Queen will light the first of more than 1000 beacons across the country to mark her birthday. Castle Mound at Burwell will host the District Council’s beacon.

Rare Bee Orchids to be preserved with new mowing programme

Reference:  PR/11Apr16/BeeOrchids Date:  Mon, 04/11/2016   Rare Bee Orchid plants discovered in Ely will be given the opportunity to flourish thanks to a new mowing programme. The regular grass cutters, who maintain public open spaces for East Cambridgeshire District Council, recently found a small colony of Bee Orchids, which they mowed around for protection. This and other sightings were reported to the Ely Local Group of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire, who completed a survey of the area, discovering many more plants in the process.

New district leisure centre planning application submitted

Reference:  PR/05Apr16/ELC1 Date:  Tue, 04/05/2016   Further progress on delivering the new district leisure centre was made this week with the submission of the reserved matters planning application. The scheme has been granted outline planning permission under the hybrid planning application for the cinema, but the plans have to go through the Reserved Matters process to agree the design and layout of the site. Council-owned land at The Vineyards in Ely to remain as open space

The decision for the land not to be developed was reached after a review by Councillors at the Asset Development Committee meeting on Wednesday 23 rd March 2016, where views of local members and residents were also shared.

Council launches self-build register

Apprenticeship grant opening doors of opportunity for local people and businesses

Last year’s grant – a total of £16,000 provided by the District Council’s Economic Development Team – was given as either a stand-alone amount, or as a top-up to the National Apprenticeship AGE Grant worth £1500 per company, which the Council also encourages businesses to apply for.

Central Government makes East Cambs District Council new host of national housing programme

St Mary’s Street car park, Ely, closed on 15th March for tree maintenance work

Signs will be displayed in the car park a week in advance of its closure to serve as a reminder to those who use the facility. One stop shop for free business support a hit with local companies

The free event in Ely, which took place from 8.30am until midday, was organised by Signpost to Grow of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) in conjunction with East Cambridgeshire District Council. Around 20 business owners attended. The purpose of the event was to provide free, independent advice to local companies who are looking for support to grow.

Christmas cards turned into cash for Ely Foodbank

Reference:  PR/22Jan16/Foodbank Date:  Wed, 03/02/2016   This week, it was announced that 2015’s Christmas Card Campaign saw 1.2 tonnes of cards converted into much needed cash for Ely Foodbank. The money, which proves it pays to recycle, was raised after Ellgia Recycling teamed up with East Cambridgeshire District Council to create collection points at Ely, Littleport and Witchford, where residents could drop off Christmas cards for recycling, as well as any food they wished to donate.

New bus shelters a welcome addition to Market Street

New insect and reptile farm proves East Cambs is ‘open for business’

New communications partnership

Progress being made on Soham Railway station

Looking for land in Witchford

Recycling rates in East Cambs keep getting better

More disappointing rail news for the District

Reference:  085/15 Date:  Mon, 11/30/2015 East Cambridgeshire District Council is to write to Network Rail expressing its disappointment that further work in the district is being put on hold. The District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council had been pushing for much needed improvement to the rail network which would help freight and the local economy. Last week’s announcement from Network Rail’s new chairman, Sir Peter Hendy that following his review of the enhancement and investment programme in railway control period 5 (2014-19), plans to upgrade the Ely North Junction have been delayed.

District Leisure Centre plans making progress

Littleport leads the county in ‘Healthier Options’

No charge for toilets to be introduced in East Cambs

Ground breaking Community Land Trusts are making progress

More improvements at the Country Park

Disappointing news on Soham rail but Councils continue station push

Reference:  064/15 Date:  Wed, 09/09/2015 With Network Rail putting on hold plans to double a section of rail track Ely and Soham, local Councils are determined this decision will not hold up their work on developing the business case for a new Soham Railway Station.   Cambridgeshire County Council and East Cambridgeshire District Council had been pushing for the much needed capacity improvements to the rail track which would help freight and the local economy.

The review began earlier this year by assessing the current state of the nine toilets in Ely, Littleport, Burwell and Fordham which currently cost over £200,000 a year and looked at how other areas are managing their toilets. One of the ways many District Councils across the country fund their public conveniences is through a charge to fund improved facilities.

Littleport set to join in National Heritage weekend

Reference:  060/15 Date:  Mon, 08/17/2015 The Littleport Town Team is joining in the UK wide celebration of the National Heritage weekend.   The weekend, which runs from Friday 11 to 13 September, will see the celebration of the town’s heritage.  It is ten years since an array of white shirts were suspended over the Main Street in a creative promotion to celebrate Littleport’s connection with Hope Bros.   Ten years on, the team aim to capture the town’s heritage once again – in a slightly different style.

First winners of the Recycling Award scheme announced

Mr & Mrs Dean from Downham Road, Ely were pulled out of the hat after their household entered the competition by simply putting their recycling bin out for collection. New arrangements from mooring on Ely’s Riverside

Reference:  054/15 Date:  Tue, 07/28/2015 New mooring arrangements are being introduced by East Cambridgeshire District Council to the riverside in Ely from Monday 7 September to ensure visiting boats can access spaces and enjoy the historic city. Following an extensive consultation with boating organisations, businesses and local residents, the new scheme, allows boats to moor for free for 48 hours with then no return for 48 hours.
