With Stagecoach taking over the Norfolk Green AbsolutELY bus service in Ely from April, the service is to be renamed the number 15.

Last year, the service, which helps residents get to work, shop in the city centre or catch up with friends, had its financial support extended until February 2017.

With passenger numbers rising year on year – in 2012/13, the annual number of journeys was 40,285 and in 2013/14 this rose to 50,807 – East Cambridgeshire District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council agreed in Autumn 2014 to continue the service.

With today’s ruling that planning permission for a new Ely Southern Bypass can be given – East Cambridgeshire District Council is calling for the work to begin as soon as possible.

As Eric Pickles MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, decided not to determine the plans for the 1.7km long road himself – the approval by the Planning Committee at Cambridgeshire County Council now stands.
